PANDERING WILL NOT CURE HIV/AIDS !

Tonight's debate may have scored some points for Hillary Clinton , but I was insulted and infuriated. Whether or not the Media and the American people would be concerned about HIV/AIDS among African American women it would be addressed more if they were White women, does not address this serious issue and I am disgusted that Hillary addressed it as cheaply as she did.

It's called race/gender baiting and this African American female was not impressed. I think , one of the mistakes that Hillary and some of the other white candidates continue to make, is underestimating our intelligence to know the difference between a race baiting panderer and someone who is genuinely concerned about the Black community. They think they can fake a black accent and mimic some in the Black community, and assume that they are relating to us as a people. It's beyond fake. It's offensive and insulting and I have had it with Hillary doing this. It may work on older uneducated Blacks who are still under the impression that ALL of their problems are related to the White man keeping them down, but it doesn't work on me. I am part of a new generation of Blacks and I don't blame the "White Man" for everything. Some things are , gasp , actually my own peoples fault. If Hillary really cared she would have addressed the actual problem. AIDS among African American women.

If I were standing in place of Hillary, I would have stated the following:

"Ladies, we need to start getting real. Seventy percent of the new cases for H.I.V are among us. This is BS. (applause) If we really want to stop this, we are going to have to take steps on our own to stop it, whether or not the Media addresses it. (applause). The most effective way to ensure that we don't get HIV/AIDS is to KEEP OUR LEGS CLOSED! You don't have to wait for the media to tell you that. Tell yourself that(roaring applause) Now, some of you are obviously not going to do that, and that's your choice. You have that right. So, if you are going to insist upon  "getting your freak on" (laughter) then I would strongly urge you to use some common sense. By that, I mean, use a condom, keep it out of your mouth and stop taking it from behind (roar, laughs, applause) ."

"And Brothas, ( ooooohhhh) if you are confused about yourself (laugh) and can't decide on just one "partner" or one "type" of partner, the very least you can do , is have some respect and use a condom while you are trying to figure it out. We all know about the practice of DOWN LOW  and you have the right to be whatever and whoever you want to be, but you also have a responsibility to practice safe sex if you are going to have multiple partners. Having unsafe sex and then taking that back to your wife is immoral. I don't care if people get angry. I'm trying to save your lives here. I'd rather have a low approval rating than a 70% approval rating to match that 70% new cases for H.I.V. among African American women. ( applause )"

In all fairness, maybe Hillary Clinton would not be able to get away with talking like that, but I bet you Michelle Obama would.

Thank you for calling for responsibility in our community.  I am a black man, and many of the problems in our community our own fault but we don't wanna take that responsibility.  So many people were PISSED when Bill Cosby got uppity a couple years ago, and that was mainly because he spoke the truth.  Barack spoke the truth to the community at Howard, Hillary Clinton opened her mouth and pandered at every chance.  I hope people don't fall for it.

I know. I'm sick of "others" telling "us" who our "leaders" are. We need to take responsibility for ourselves when it's in our power to do so. This is ONE issue where it's totally, within our power to act on our own communities behalf.

The Media always tries to tell black people who their leaders are.

You can't be serious (none / 0)

about your suggestion of what a candidate for President of the United States should say in addressing the topic of HIV-AIDS in a public forum.

Although, I must say, that you have done a pretty good job of summarizing the Bush administration policy...except that they would leave out the condom part, since those are a "no-no", too.

Re: You can't be serious (none / 0)

I find it amazing that some people think asking people to be responsible for themselves is somehow a Republican thing.  People SHOULD be responsible for themselves, and HIV/AIDS is largely an issue about responsibility.  Hillary Clinton is an excellent panderer, that's what she'd done everytime these candidates have shared a stage.  From her "let's bomb somebody" response to Brian Williams' fear-mongering question in the first debate, to this latest pander about if white women were getting AIDS in record numbers, it'd have been cured yesterday.  The REALLY SAD PART though is that if this were a "regular" debate, the question wouldn't have been asked.

Color me not surprised and absolutely unimpressed that this poster "does not like Clinton," and "has had it with her."

I was surprised that Clinton received the most applause of the evening, given that this was in a way Obama's hometurf.  She won this debate with candor, clarity, knowledge.

The more people see her in debates, the more they seem to like her.  That is also going to be true in a good portion of the AA community after tonight.

Hillary did the best job of pandering to the audience to be sure.

If that is your definition of winning the debate then so be it.

Uh, no I don't think so. If you knew how to use your eyes, you would have seen the HILLARY BUTTONS on several peoples jackets and lapels.

This was Hillary's crowd.

Yeah, I saw your diary on dailykos in which you made the same conspirational point.   Cheesy, to say the least.  So, the crowd was handpicked to be Clinton's crowd?  Ridiculous.   Some Obama folks can't be talked to, because they are not really interested in "talk," just to do their own "pandering."   This is one of those times.

Let's be real here (none / 0)

So all the hard work to help African American community by Clintons' during 90s is are pandering?

Now we have a black candidate Obama, who has been in the senate for only 2 years. And Suddently he's running for president? What are his qualifications? If you are talking about pandering, that's probably another form of pandering by the media to 'manufacture' a 'black star'.

In my opinion, there are many many African Americans who are more qualified than Obama. How about Cohen Powell?

Re: Let's be real here (none / 0)

RE Powell:  Any person who was so easily duped by Cheney and the neo-con on WMD is not especially qualified to be President.

I'll grant you that Hillary is the best candiate when it comes to pandering to the various factions of the Democratic Party.

Re: PANDERING WILL NOT CURE HIV/AIDS ! (3.00 / 1)

I agree, as a black male I always find it terribly offensive how white politicians butter-up black folks with victimology. Don't get me wrong, some of us buy it hook line and sinker, and that's on us. But that is exactly the sort of message that the most downtrodden among us DO NOT NEED to hear. The truth is, pathologies and cultural taboos within OUR OWN community are to blame for the spread of HIV. Of course wider American society ought to care, but we'd get alot futher on this issues, as black people, if we focused on our own agency to address the problem.

Obama was point own when it discussed the silence from black churches on AIDS and the rampant homophobia in the black community. These are cultural deficits that we need to address--deficits that only black folks can tackle.

It doesn't help when white politicians (and some in the "black leadership) distract of from this, but it's to be expected I guess. Kudos to Clinton for scoring political points, but it's tragic if black folks take her remarks as a prescription for anything. I don't blame her though, I blame US for falling for it.

You are out there.  That was an obvious slam at the Bush administration, not "white people."

Re: PANDERING WILL NOT CURE HIV/AIDS ! (3.00 / 1)

And just where were your preferred candidates when it came to addressing this? Certainly not championing your points. If you are insulted it should be with the candidates you support not by someone you don't.

And Obama's quick clarification to Joe Biden's point that people should not be afraid to get aids testing is exactly the point Biden was making. Obama came off embarrassed that he was tested, as if he needed to explain it. All rational adults should get tested. Period.

Re: PANDERING WILL NOT CURE HIV/AIDS ! (none / 0)

I'm the person that gave the single vote to "somewhat important" only because the two bottom choices would seem rather callous and the "extremely important" would suggest it's a top priority of mine.   I would be lying if I said it were.

As an average middle-aged boring white guy I would also be lying if I pretended to know how AIDS is effecting the black community.   Clearly, I will never see the situation from the same perspective as you do.    In the same way that I will never really be able to see and feel how racism impacts the black community.

There should be a fifth option, "HIV/AIDS needs to be stopped dead in its tracks, lets do what we can stop this rotten disease before it hurts anybody else."
